PLEASE NOTE: In the autumn of 1995, we hatched the idea for a free, local gardening publication. The following spring, we published the first issue of Michigan Gardener magazine. Advertisers, readers, and distribution sites embraced our vision. Thus began an exciting journey of helping our local gardening community grow and prosper.
After 27 years, nearly 200 issues published, and millions of copies printed, we have decided it is time to end the publication of our Print Magazine and E-Newsletter.
We will continue to update our Website with articles and enter current gardening events in our website Event Calendar. All the best wishes for 2024 and beyond.

My husband and I have bought and moved into my childhood home. When I was a girl, there was a rock garden, and everyone who’s lived here in the intervening years has simply ruined this little area. They planted myrtle, or vinca, and a couple of huge hostas. I got the hostas out yesterday and gave them away because they overpowered the rest of the garden. The myrtle seems to be the biggest problem. I’m also wondering what to plant once I get rid of that. I have just a few poetica narcissus and some white violets left over from the old garden. I also planted a mock orange at the edge, next to our side porch. Any suggestions, or advice about what to plant would be helpful. The garden has a southern exposure.
